A Minnesota man has been charged with second-degree murder after a hospital security guard died from injuries sustained during an attack while he attempted to leave the facility on Christmas Day, according to prosecutors.
Jonathan Winch, 35, was being held in the emergency department at M Health Fairview Lakes Hospital in Wyoming, Minnesota, on Thursday evening when he tried to leave the building. Authorities say that during the incident, Winch encountered 43-year-old security guard Andrea Merrell outside the hospital, where a physical confrontation occurred, according to a criminal complaint obtained by KARE 11.
Merrell was found unresponsive at the scene and was transported for medical care. She died two days later from her injuries. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide caused by traumatic head injuries resulting from a physical assault.
“Andrea was a valued member of our security team, and our hearts are with her loved ones and coworkers during this incredibly difficult time,” M Health Fairview said in a statement. “We are focused on supporting our teams and ensuring they have the resources they need.”

Prosecutors say surveillance video shows Winch and Merrell struggling in the hospital parking lot around 5:30 p.m. Backup officers arrived to find Merrell unconscious and critically injured. Court documents state that Winch then attempted to enter her security vehicle and later jumped onto the windshield of a responding squad car.
Officers reported that Winch did not comply with commands and continued to resist arrest even after being tased. Prosecutors said he repeatedly stated that he did not intend to harm Merrell before he was taken into custody.

Authorities have not disclosed why Winch was hospitalized or placed on a medical hold. He is a resident of St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin.
Merrell also served as a reserve police officer with the White Bear Police Department and had worked with the local fire department. Friends described her as compassionate, outgoing, and dedicated to making others feel safe.
“She was the most kind-hearted soul,” friend Heath Miller told KARE 11. “Anyone she met instantly loved her.”

Another friend, Pam Heaton, said Merrell often took time during her shifts to talk with staff and patients throughout the hospital.
“She made people feel safe and welcome,” Heaton said. “She was supposed to be our friend for life, and that was taken away.”
Winch is being held on $2 million bail and has been ordered to undergo a mental competency evaluation. He is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 27.
