Russia’s Powerful New Missiles Now Stationed in Belarus

As peace talks between Russia and Ukraine continue, President Vladimir Putin is projecting strength. Russia and Belarus released new images and video showing Moscow’s Oreshnik missile systems deployed at undisclosed sites in forested areas of Belarus, according to Reuters. The missiles are capable of carrying nuclear warheads, and Putin has claimed they travel at speeds up to 10 times the speed of sound, making them extremely difficult to intercept, the Guardian reports.
Putin has also warned that Russia could use the intermediate-range missiles against European allies that are supporting Ukraine’s strikes on Russian territory, the Associated Press notes. A missile launched from Belarus could reach a military air base in Poland in about 11 minutes and NATO headquarters in roughly 17 minutes. Some U.S. analysts, using satellite imagery, believe the missiles and their mobile launchers may be stationed at a former airfield in eastern Belarus, though the released video did not disclose a specific location.
