Operators of several Somali-owned daycare centers in Minnesota are facing increased scrutiny following an investigation by independent journalist Nick Shirley, who alleges widespread fraud in the state’s childcare assistance program.

Shirley previously released an investigation claiming that millions of dollars in public funds were improperly obtained by certain daycare providers. In video clips shared on X, Shirley is seen attempting to question staff at a Minnesota childcare center that reportedly claimed to serve more than 100 children, despite appearing largely empty at the time of his visit. One clip shows a door being shut as he tried to ask questions.

Shirley later published a 42-minute video detailing his findings, stating that his team identified more than $110 million in questionable funding in a single day. He urged viewers to share the footage widely.

Following Shirley’s report, a New York Post journalist visited the Quality “Learing” Center in Minneapolis, one of the daycare facilities highlighted in the investigation. The reporter attempted to ask an employee about the allegations of fraud.

“What is your response to the allegations?” the reporter asked. “Is there fraud going on here?”

The employee responded angrily and used profanity, repeatedly telling the reporter to leave the area while recording the interaction.

According to the New York Post, shortly after the confrontation, children were brought into the building. A local resident told the outlet that it was the first time they had seen children enter the facility.

State authorities have not yet publicly announced the results of any formal investigation related to these specific allegations.
