A man who spent just $500 (£390) at a storage unit auction walked away with an astonishing $7.5 million (£5.8 million) discovery.

The unit was purchased at auction run by Storage Wars auctioneer Dan Dotson. The popular U.S. show documents the sale of storage units that have been locked and left unpaid for at least three months, with bidders competing without knowing what’s inside.

Over the years, these auctions have uncovered everything from vintage cars to strange and valuable hidden items. But this particular find was on another level.

Dotson said he first learned about the discovery during an unexpected encounter while out in public.

“An older Asian woman at the table next to me kept looking at me like she wanted to say something,” Dotson explained on his joint YouTube channel with his wife and fellow auctioneer, Laura Dotson. “Eventually, she came over and told me her husband works with a guy who bought a unit from me for $500 and found a safe inside.”

According to Dotson, the buyer initially tried to open the safe but failed.

“They called in another person, and when that person finally got it open, the safe wasn’t empty,” he said. “It had $7.5 million in cash inside.”

The discovery left Dotson stunned. “You wouldn’t think someone would forget $7.5 million,” he said. “Unless maybe someone else was responsible for it, or the situation was complicated.”

The origin of the cash remains a mystery. Dotson suggested it may have simply been abandoned.

“A credit card could have gone bad, they might have moved away, maybe someone went to jail — who knows,” he said.

Whatever the explanation, the buyer’s $500 risk turned into an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime payoff.
