Fugitive migrant criminal bizarrely tries to hide in town’s Nativity scene
A fugitive migrant in Italy made a bold — and bizarre — attempt to evade police by blending into a Christmas Nativity scene, pretending to be one of the Three Wise Men.
The ruse was uncovered by the town’s mayor, who admitted he initially considered praising the display for how lifelike the “statue” looked. That changed once the figure moved.
The 38-year-old Ghanaian man was spotted standing in the background of the outdoor scene, arms raised, trying to mimic the life-size statues. His winter coat, however, gave him away.
The migrant had been on the run after allegedly assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. He was previously sentenced to nine and a half months in prison by a court in Bologna but had escaped to southern Italy, eventually ending up in the small town of Galatone in Puglia.
“While standing in front of the Nativity carefully made by our tourism office, I noticed a presence I had initially mistaken for part of the scene,” Mayor Flavio Filoni wrote on Facebook. “A detail that seemed harmless, but turned out to be decisive. Thanks to the quick intervention of our Local Police, State Police, and Carabinieri, it was possible to track down and identify a wanted fugitive. This result confirms how fundamental it is to trust the daily work of those who ensure safety and legality.”
The man was quickly arrested and is now in custody in the nearby city of Lecce, where he will serve the remainder of his sentence.
