A 27-year-old woman is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say she drove while intoxicated the wrong way on a major Texas highway and crashed into a family of four, killing three of them.

Majesti Faith Lee has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault, according to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened early Saturday morning around 2 a.m. along the 11400 block of South Highway 99, on the outskirts of Houston. A family of four — Lizbeth Rodriguez Contreras, 27; Diego Pena Jr., 26; their 5-year-old daughter, Camila Pena; and a 3-year-old boy — was traveling northbound at the time.

Investigators say Lee was driving southbound in the northbound lanes when her vehicle collided head-on with the family’s car.

Contreras and Camila were pronounced dead at the scene. Pena Jr. and the 3-year-old child were airlifted to a local hospital, where Pena Jr. later died. As of Wednesday, the young boy remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

Lee was also taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities said alcohol was determined to be a contributing factor in the crash.

She was later arrested and booked into jail on bonds totaling $1,050,000.

“Our hearts are with the family as they endure an unimaginable loss,” Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan said in a statement. “This tragedy is a painful reminder of how quickly lives can be changed when impaired driving occurs, and why making responsible choices behind the wheel is so critical.”

A GoFundMe campaign created for the victims says the family was leaving a holiday party when a wrong-way driver struck them, causing a sudden and devastating loss. The fundraiser notes that the surviving child faces a long recovery.

South Highway 99, also known as the Grand Parkway, loops around the Houston area and is one of the region’s major roadways.
