Three Killed in Moscow Explosion Days After Car Bomb Killed Senior Russian General
Three people, including two police officers, were killed in an explosion in Moscow on Wednesday, according to Russian investigators. The blast occurred just days after a separate car bombing nearby killed a senior military official.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said the two traffic officers were approaching a “suspicious individual” when an explosive device detonated. Both officers, along with another person standing close to the scene, later died from their injuries.
The New York Times identified the officers as 24-year-old Ilya Klimanov and 25-year-old Maksim Gorbunov. Reports circulating on the messaging app Telegram suggest the third person killed may have been the individual who planted the explosive, according to the Guardian.
Investigators and forensic specialists are continuing to examine the scene, officials said.
The explosion took place in the same area of southern Moscow where Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov was killed earlier this week. Sarvarov, who headed the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, died Monday when an explosive device detonated beneath his vehicle.
