An airline passenger caused a scene earlier this week after Alaska Airlines declined to make an exception to its pet travel rules for her two cats.

According to reporting by The Daily Mail, the incident occurred when a woman attempted to bring two cats onto a flight in a single carrier placed under the seat in front of her. Airline staff determined that the animals were too large to safely share one carrier and refused to allow them to travel that way.

The passenger, later identified as Alexandra Compton, a Portland native currently living in Las Vegas, was recorded on video confronting airline employees at the gate. In the footage, Compton can be heard raising her voice at staff members as they explained the airline’s pet policy and declined to make an exception.

“Show me the policy, then, before I booked the flight, that said that I had to have a certain weight of cat to go under the seat,” Compton said during the exchange.

Alaska Airlines’ policy allows up to two pets of the same species to travel in one carrier, provided the animals fit comfortably, no body parts extend outside the carrier, and the pets are not in distress. Based on the size of Compton’s cats, staff concluded that transporting them together could pose a risk to their well-being.

During the interaction, Compton repeatedly challenged the authority of airline employees to make that determination, insisting that her carrier fit under the seat and had been purchased specifically for holiday travel.

“I’m not yelling,” she said at one point, despite continuing to speak loudly. “You’re telling me I can’t go home for Christmas right now.”

Airline staff remained calm and reiterated that company policy could not be overridden. They ultimately informed Compton that she would need to use two separate carriers and pay the associated fees in order for both cats to travel.

The video ends without showing the final resolution at the airport.

Compton later addressed the viral incident on social media, stating that she believed she had followed the rules correctly and would be receiving a refund.

“I’m viral! Here’s the info from the Alaska website — I did exactly as I always do while traveling with my cats,” she wrote. “I was at the counter to pay for them, like I always do. Alaska just wanted me to pay for a second seat. No.”

She concluded by saying that she ultimately made it home with her cats and that a refund was being processed.
