Three inmates — including one awaiting trial on a murder charge and another already convicted of murder — escaped from a county jail east of Atlanta early Monday morning, according to authorities.
The escape occurred at the DeKalb County Jail and was discovered during a routine security check, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said. Sheriff Melody Maddox stated that officials are taking the incident seriously and are working quickly to return the escapees to custody. Details about how the inmates managed to flee have not yet been released.
Authorities warned that the men may be armed and should be considered dangerous. The public is urged not to approach them and to remain vigilant. The jail is located in Decatur, roughly 10 miles east of downtown Atlanta.

The sheriff’s office released photos and information identifying the escapees:
-
Stevenson Charles, 24, is charged with murder and armed robbery.
-
Yusuf Minor, 31, faces two counts of armed robbery and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
-
Noad Yohannes, 25, is charged with simple assault, arson, and unlawful acts of violence in a penal institution.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Minor was already serving a life sentence after being convicted last year of felony murder and malice murder. Charles was also sentenced to life after pleading guilty to multiple crimes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and other violent offenses. He was additionally convicted on federal carjacking charges, making him a primary focus of the search.
U.S. Marshal Thomas E. Brown of the Northern District of Georgia said law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing the fugitives and are confident they will be captured.
