A Missouri man attending a middle school basketball game was reportedly attacked by a person who claimed the victim had hit his dog with a car.
Authorities say Charles Cooper allegedly struck the 21-year-old victim with a metal flashlight and punched him repeatedly in a parking lot, reportedly saying, “I want to hear you cry” and “I’m going to make you bleed.”
According to court documents, Cooper told the victim, “You made my dog bleed internally, now I’m going to make you bleed internally,” while continuing the assault.
The incident took place at Pleasant Hope Middle School in Polk County. The victim had stepped outside for some air after getting frustrated with the game. Police say Cooper confronted him, yelling, “You hit my dog and ran away.” The victim acknowledged hitting something with his car on the way to the game but said he did not realize it was a dog.
Court documents state that Cooper allegedly used a metal flashlight to attack the victim, knocking him to the ground and continuing the beating. Witnesses reported seeing the assault as they entered the gymnasium. One woman said she yelled at Cooper to stop, and he responded, “No, he hit my dog.”
The victim sustained multiple injuries and was hospitalized. Cooper was charged with first-degree assault, for attempting to cause physical injury under sudden passion, and armed criminal action.
