A Florida woman is facing charges after police say she forcibly dunked a 6-year-old boy underwater at a resort where she and her family were staying.

Tiffany Griffith, 36, is in custody at the Osceola County Jail, charged with aggravated child abuse. Authorities said the incident occurred Friday at the Gaylord Palms resort in Kissimmee during a family vacation. According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Griffith’s child had been involved in a “splashing match” with another child in the pool.

Witnesses told police that when Griffith saw her son dunked underwater by another child, she entered the pool, yelled at the boy, and allegedly put her hands on his shoulders, holding him underwater for several seconds. The boy reportedly suffered a nosebleed and left the pool to find his parents, while Griffith allegedly yelled at them before leaving the area.

The sheriff’s office responded to the resort at 4:30 p.m., located Griffith, and arrested her. She was booked without bond. During a Sunday court appearance, her attorney suggested Griffith might not have caused the boy’s nosebleed. The judge challenged the attorney, asking whether forcibly submerging a child was sufficient to cause harm. The attorney ultimately withdrew the argument.

Griffith remains in custody on one count of aggravated child abuse and is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday.
