Barry Manilow announced on Monday that he has been diagnosed with lung cancer and will postpone his January concert dates while he undergoes surgery.

The 82-year-old singer shared the news in a statement posted on Instagram, explaining that the diagnosis came after he experienced bronchitis twice over several weeks. As a precaution, his doctor ordered an MRI, which revealed a cancerous spot on his left lung.

“The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed,” Manilow wrote. He added that the cancer was caught early and that doctors do not believe it has spread, though additional tests are being conducted to confirm that assessment.

Manilow said he will have surgery to remove the spot, requiring him to reschedule his January performances from his Christmas: A Gift of Love concert series. His revised tour schedule will resume after his Valentine’s Day weekend shows in Las Vegas, with performances running from late February through April.

“We were all looking forward to the January shows and hate having to move everything around,” Manilow said, while apologizing to fans for the changes.

He also encouraged fans to stay attentive to their health. “If you have even the slightest symptom, get tested!” he wrote.

A native of New York City, Manilow is a Grammy, Tony, and Emmy Award winner best known for hits such as “Copacabana” and “Mandy.” He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002.

Manilow has been married to his husband, Garry Kief, since 2014. The couple primarily resides in Palm Springs, California.
