Amazon Apologizes After Delivery Driver Allegedly Steals Family Cat

Amazon has apologized after a third-party delivery driver was caught on home security video allegedly taking a family’s cat in Lakewood, Los Angeles County, earlier this month.

The incident occurred on December 11, according to KTLA-TV. Diane Huff-Medina shared footage showing an Amazon Flex worker delivering a package to her home. The video shows the man placing the package at the front door and taking a photo to confirm delivery. Moments later, the family’s cat, Piper—a Siamese mix—approached the driver. Piper appeared friendly as the man crouched to pet her, but the footage then shows him picking the cat up by the scruff of her neck and carrying her to his vehicle before driving away.

Huff-Medina told KTLA that Piper has lived with her and her three sons for six years. While the cat is microchipped, she was not wearing a collar at the time. The family did not realize Piper was missing until the next day, after reviewing footage from their Ring doorbell camera.

In a statement to KTLA, Amazon spokesman Louie Tran called the incident “a horrible act” and said the company had apologized to Huff-Medina. He added that the Amazon Flex delivery partner involved is no longer eligible to deliver to customers. Authorities have identified the driver, and charges are pending. Tran also said Amazon is cooperating with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on the investigation.

Huff-Medina described the situation as especially difficult for her children, whose father passed away a few years ago. “It’s a helpless feeling because we watched her get taken, so I don’t know where she is or if she’s OK,” she said. Her children have been asking constantly if Piper has returned.

The family has shared the video on Facebook seeking help from their community and stressed that their main goal is simply to bring Piper home safely. In a recent comment on the post, Huff-Medina noted, “The person responsible was found and charges are being filed. Piper is still missing.”
