Cheers erupted from the ground late Thursday night as a utility crew rescued a pet cat who had been stuck atop a transmission pole for six days, braving heavy rain and wind as an atmospheric river battered the region this week.

The 7-year-old orange tabby named “Brooks” climbed an energized transmission pole in the 3400 block of NE 94th Way six days ago and had not been able to get back down, according to its owners.

The owners told KATU they thought Brooks was being chased by a predator and climbed the pole to escape.

The pole belongs to the PacifiCorp utility company. A spokesperson with the company told KATU that they first became aware of the situation on Tuesday. A crew was sent out to rescue the cat, but the spokesperson said Brooks was afraid of the employee and would not approach them.

PacifiCorp originally planned to make another rescue attempt Thursday night, but later said it would have to wait until Friday.

But Clark Public Utilities said it had a crew available and willing to attempt to rescue the cat Thursday night.

After setting up its truck below, a two-person crew was hoisted to the top of the pole, and just before 10 p.m. plucked Brooks off the pole, holding him up in triumphant and to the cheers of onlookers below, before putting him safely in a bag.

Minutes later the tabby and his family were reunited.

“We’re just relieved. We were like getting really hopeless, and so this was a big relief,” said Heather Suitor, the cat’s owner. “So I just appreciate everybody who helped and called and was here to support, and yeah, and the guys who came out from the city core from Clark. They’ve been great. So we’re just really grateful.”

Officers with Clark County Animal Control were also on scene to help.

Heather and her husband Steve said they are also grateful to the neighbors and everyone who helped get the word out and bring their cat back home.

CPU told KATU that as the rescue took place it had other crews out restoring power. Those crews would work through the night to get the lights back on to those still without power.
