Body-camera footage captures the terrifying moment a convicted felon attempts to execute a police officer inside a Walmart loss-prevention room

A violent felon was caught on camera allegedly attempting to shoot a police officer in the head inside a Walmart loss prevention room—an act that nearly turned deadly.

Authorities say the officer survived only because the suspect’s gun malfunctioned and a Walmart employee intervened without hesitation.

The incident occurred around 1:45 p.m. Thursday at a Walmart on Atlantic Boulevard NE in Canton, according to FOX10.

A Canton Police Department officer responded to a shoplifting call and escorted 21-year-old Shane Newman and 23-year-old Katerina Jeffrey to the store’s loss prevention office. Moments later, the situation escalated dramatically.

Police say Newman pulled out a firearm, aimed it at the officer’s head, and pulled the trigger. The weapon failed to fire.

In a life-saving move, a Walmart asset protection associate immediately tackled Newman, preventing another attempt. The officer then took Newman to the ground and placed him under arrest. Body camera footage shows the officer chose not to fire his own weapon, later explaining he did not want to risk hitting the employee who had bravely jumped on the suspect.

Court records show Newman now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, felonious assault on a police officer, robbery, drug possession, and having a weapon while under disability. Police confirmed Newman was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a prior felony conviction. Officers also recovered 50 blue pills identified as Molly during the arrest.

Jeffrey has been charged with complicity to commit robbery.

Both suspects appeared in court Friday. Newman was given a $1 million bond, while Jeffrey’s bond was set at $500,000. They are scheduled to return to court on December 23.

Canton Police Chief John Gabbard emphasized the seriousness of the incident and expressed gratitude that it did not end in tragedy.

“This incident is a reminder of the ever-present threat of violence against police officers and the gracious provision of God’s protection,” Gabbard said. “Thank you to all of you who regularly pray with me for our officers and our community.”

Had the gun fired, authorities say the outcome could have been far different.
