A British aristocrat with family connections to Princess Diana and Winston Churchill is facing criminal charges after being accused of strangling the same individual on three separate occasions over a period of less than two years.

Charles James Spencer-Churchill, the 12th Duke of Marlborough, is alleged to have carried out the attacks in Woodstock between November 2022 and May 2024, according to Thames Valley Police. The 70-year-old was arrested in May 2024 and is scheduled to appear before Oxford Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where he will face charges of non-fatal intentional strangulation, the BBC reported.

Spencer-Churchill inherited the dukedom in 2014 following the death of his father. Formerly known as Jamie Blandford, he has previously been reported by The Guardian to have struggled with long-term drug addiction.

The duke resides at Blenheim Palace, the Marlborough family’s ancestral home and the largest private residence in the United Kingdom. He is a distant cousin of Winston Churchill, who was born on the estate, and is also related through the Spencer family to the late Princess Diana.

The Blenheim Palace Heritage Foundation, which owns and manages the estate, declined to comment, describing the allegations as part of the duke’s private life.
