28-year-old Daughter Found Rob Reiner’s Body, Then Ran

A scheduled Sunday massage at the Brentwood home of Rob and Michele Singer Reiner led to the shocking discovery of the Hollywood couple’s deaths, according to a source close to the family. When the massage therapist received no response at the gate, she called the Reiners’ 28-year-old daughter, Romy. Romy arrived with a roommate, went inside, and found her father deceased, the source told The New York Times. The roommate called 911 after Romy fled the house in distress. Paramedics later informed her that her mother had also died. Authorities have not yet determined whether the deaths occurred late Saturday or on Sunday.
The couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, who had been living in a guesthouse on the property, was arrested later Sunday after leaving a Los Angeles gas station, according to surveillance footage obtained by KNBC. On Tuesday, he was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with his parents’ deaths. A family associate disputed reports suggesting the Reiners had recently feared Nick or that Romy immediately suspected him. The source said Romy told paramedics that her brother lived on the property but did not identify him as responsible.
The night before the tragedy, the family attended a Christmas party at Conan O’Brien’s home. Early reports suggested Rob Reiner had confronted Nick over erratic behavior, but the family source described no heated argument and said media accounts of tension and an early departure were exaggerated. There had been no recent signs that Nick might become violent, despite a long history of substance use that the family had been addressing together for years.
