U-Haul Truck Explodes in Parking Lot of Idaho Retailer, One Person Dead

One Killed in U-Haul Explosion in Lewiston, Idaho

One person was killed Saturday morning when a U-Haul truck exploded in a retail parking lot in Lewiston, Idaho, near an Old Navy store and close to the Washington state border. The explosion occurred around 7:15 a.m.

Early reports indicate the blast was likely accidental. Investigators say the truck was carrying stored materials, including gasoline and propane tanks, according to a joint statement from the Lewiston Police Department and Lewiston Fire Department. Julian Sorrell, Lewiston’s Fire Marshal, said there was no indication of criminal intent based on current information.

The explosion caused significant damage to nearby businesses, including the Courtyard Marriott and Old Navy. Officials confirmed that no fire followed the blast.

Authorities assured the public that there is no ongoing danger but advised people to avoid the area while officials complete their work. Multiple agencies, including the Lewiston Police Department, Lewiston Fire Department, Idaho State Police, and local city and county officials, collaborated to investigate and secure the scene.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
