Incredible moment Bondi Beach hero disarms terrorist who opened fire on Hanukkah party
The hero dramatically tackled the terrorist to the ground and disarmed him during the rampage.
A heroic shopkeeper bravely tackled and disarmed one of the terrorists who opened fire on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, Australia, on Sunday.
Ahmed, the owner of a local fruit stall, dramatically wrestled the gunman to the ground and seized his weapon during the attack. Video shows Ahmed pointing the firearm at the terrorist, who fell before fleeing the scene.
In the process, Ahmed was shot twice in the arm by a second attacker. He was hospitalized for surgery, according to a relative. “He’s in the hospital, and we don’t know exactly what’s going on inside. We do hope he will be fine. He’s a hero, 100 percent,” said his cousin, Mustafa, to Australian outlet 7News. Later footage showed Ahmed bloodied but conscious, receiving treatment at the scene. Remarkably, Ahmed had no prior experience with weapons, his family said.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Ahmed at his Sunday cabinet meeting. “We saw the actions of a brave man… a brave Muslim, and I salute him for stopping one of the terrorists from killing innocent Jews,” he said, according to the Times of Israel.
Australian leaders echoed the sentiment. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called those who intervened “heroes,” praising everyday Australians who put themselves at risk to protect others. “These Australians are heroes, and their bravery has saved lives,” he said. Chris Minns, Premier of New South Wales, described Ahmed’s actions as “the most unbelievable scene I’ve ever seen. That man is a genuine hero, and I’ve got no doubt that there are many, many people alive tonight because of his bravery.”
The attack claimed at least 16 lives, including children, and left 29 people injured. The two terrorists opened fire at the Chanukah by the Sea event on Sydney’s iconic beach. One attacker was killed, and the other is in custody after a rampage that lasted at least 10 minutes.
