Most of us loan things out to be kind or to help someone out—maybe a neighbor borrows a tool for a quick project, or a friend borrows a jacket or dress with promises to return it. Sometimes it’s even money, which can feel like a bigger deal. We usually lend things because we care and trust the person, but occasionally the person who borrowed it doesn’t seem to care in the same way about returning it. When that happens, it can feel awkward or frustrating.
