72-year-old Texas woman hospitalized with broken pelvis, internal bleeding after violent geese attack
A 72-year-old woman was left hospitalized after a flock of geese knocked her to the ground and repeatedly pecked her at a Texas park.
A 72-year-old woman was hospitalized at a major trauma center after being knocked to the ground and repeatedly pecked by a flock of geese at City Lake Park in Royse City, Texas, resulting in internal bleeding, according to reports.
Lydia West was feeding ducks at a pond in the park, part of her usual routine, when several geese attacked her, her son David West told WFAA. “Apparently, some large geese came up to her and started attacking the food,” he said.
“She fell hard to the ground, tried to get up and flee, and the geese actually chased her down. She was trapped on the ground, unable to move,” he added. A couple visiting the park was eventually able to pull the geese off her and call paramedics.
Lydia West was first taken to a local hospital and later transferred to a Dallas trauma center after doctors assessed the severity of her injuries. She suffered a broken pelvis and internal bleeding, according to her son.

“She has several breaks on one side of her pelvis and also internal bleeding,” David West said. “She faces a long road of physical therapy and will need to relearn how to walk.” He noted that his mother had some preexisting health concerns.
“She was shocked that the geese could become that territorial and could hurt someone,” he added.
Domesticated Chinese geese, which have been spotted at the park, are known to be vocal, alert, and occasionally aggressive if they feel threatened, WFAA reported.
“It was so ironic and odd to get a call at work that my mother was being taken to the hospital because geese attacked her,” West said. “After doing some research, I realized it does happen, but it’s still a shock to process.”
