Your Wandering Mind’s Worst Thought: Overhead Highway Sign Falls Onto Car

Two people were sent to the hospital Friday night after an overhead highway sign came crashing down onto a vehicle traveling on I-77 south in Charlotte. The impact trapped the driver and forced the closure of several lanes for hours, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.

Fire crews said the sign had collapsed across the southbound lanes near Arrowood Road, landing directly on top of a car. Firefighters were able to free the trapped driver in roughly 30 minutes, and both occupants of the vehicle were transported with serious injuries, WRAL News reported. The North Carolina Department of Transportation told local media that the sign structure had been struck by a suspected drunk driver shortly before it gave way.

“Late last night Charlotte Fire crews responded to a crash on I-77 South where an overhead interstate sign collapsed onto a car, trapping the driver beneath the wreckage,” the department posted on X, noting that Engine 12 arrived within minutes to begin patient care.

Medic units and multiple fire companies operated at the scene while crews worked through the night to remove the damaged sign structure. All lanes were reopened around daybreak, according to WSOC-TV. Photos from the scene show the metal frame stretched across several lanes with the SUV’s roof severely crushed.

Officials said the Interstate Maintenance Unit assisted firefighters and is continuing to investigate exactly how the initial impact caused the sign to collapse.
