A German parking inspector and his wife have been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $1 million from a town’s parking meters. Authorities say the 40-year-old municipal worker, whose name has not been released, repeatedly took coins from the meters and funneled the money into bank accounts controlled by his 38-year-old wife, according to Euronews.
Thomas Kiechle, mayor of Kempten, said he was “stunned and dismayed” by the suspected years-long theft. The scheme came to light after a bank report flagged multiple suspicious cash deposits, leading to a police investigation. The man faces charges for 720 counts of theft, while his wife is accused of aiding and abetting in all 720 incidents, the BBC reports.
