Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys To Wear Throwback Uniforms For Thanksgiving Game

The Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys will both don throwback uniforms on Thanksgiving as they face the Green Bay Packers (1 p.m. ET on FOX) and Kansas City Chiefs (4:30 p.m. ET on CBS), respectively.

For the Lions, this will be the first time they wear their throwback uniforms since their full redesign in 2024. Last season, Detroit wore its black alternate uniforms three times to maximize appearances under the previous NFL rule, which has now expanded to allow four combined alternate or throwback games per season.

The Lions have yet to win a Thanksgiving game in the current throwback look, which features plain silver helmets, Honolulu blue jerseys with silver block numbers, plain silver pants, and Honolulu blue socks. They are 0-4 in these uniforms, with losses to the Minnesota Vikings (2017), Chicago Bears (2018), Houston Texans (2020), and Packers (2022). These should not be confused with earlier throwback versions worn in 1994, 2001-04, 2008, and 2010, which included black facemasks and a darker shade of blue. In that design, Detroit went 2-5 on Thanksgiving, including a win over Green Bay in 2003 and a loss to the Packers in 2001.

The Cowboys will wear their 1960s throwback uniforms — white helmets, blue jerseys with stars on the shoulders, and white pants — for the fourth consecutive Thanksgiving. Dallas has won three of the previous games in this look, beating the New York Giants in 2022 and 2024, and the Washington Commanders in 2023. Originally, the Cowboys wore this uniform almost every Thanksgiving from 2004 until the NFL’s one-helmet rule in 2013. During that initial run, Dallas went 5-3 in the throwbacks, including a 26-20 victory over the Chiefs in October 2009. Other wins in the uniform came against the Chicago Bears (2004), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2006), New York Jets (2007), Oakland Raiders (2009), and Miami Dolphins (2011), while losses occurred against the Denver Broncos (2005), New Orleans Saints (2010), and Washington Redskins (2012).

All six teams playing on Thanksgiving, including the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens (8:20 p.m. ET on NBC), will wear a patch honoring late Hall of Fame coach and broadcaster John Madden. This marks the third consecutive season the patch will appear.
