AITA for not being more discreet at the store for my son?

My son, age 9, is upset with me right now over an incident that happened yesterday at the store. We were there to stock up on groceries, and I was with my 9-year-old son and my 7-year-old daughter.

My son still wets the bed and wears Goodnites for it. We went to get them first, as we usually do, so they could be discreetly hidden under other items. Most of the trip went smoothly, but there was an issue at checkout.

While I was unloading the last of the groceries, I heard my son say in a worried voice, “No, mom, please stop,” but I had already put the Goodnites on the conveyor belt. When I asked what was wrong, he pointed out that a friend was at the store with her parents and didn’t want her to see the Goodnites.

I reassured my child that it would be okay and tried to hide the Goodnites by placing other groceries around them. We completed the checkout without further incident, but my child didn’t speak to me on the ride home.

Later, I asked what was making him upset. He said they didn’t want their friend to see the Goodnites and felt I was being a jerk for not stopping when asked.

I explained that I never intended to make them feel bad and that I just needed to finish unloading groceries so they could be rung up. However, he remained upset and was very quiet for the rest of the evening and at breakfast the next day.

Am I the Asshole?
