Brooklyn Serial Spitter Targeting White Women Released Day After Arrest
A 45-year-old Brooklyn resident, Anthony Caines, was taken into custody on November 13 after allegedly spitting in the faces of several white women in what authorities describe as a series of racially motivated assaults in Williamsburg and Greenpoint.
Caines, who pleaded not guilty, was released the following day under supervised release and fitted with an ankle monitor. The alleged incidents occurred over November 11 and 12.
According to details reported by the New York Post, four women were targeted in separate, unprovoked attacks. One woman was allegedly assaulted outside 285 Broadway at 10:05 a.m. on November 11; another was targeted at Bedford Avenue and Grand Street less than two hours later. A third incident occurred near Marcy Avenue and South Fourth Street at 10:40 p.m. that evening, and a fourth woman was allegedly spat on outside 186 Grand Street at 8 a.m. the next day.
Victims described the encounters as shocking and invasive. One college student told the Post she felt “violated,” adding that the attack was so sudden she struggled to process what had happened.
Caines, who has prior arrests including domestic violence and contempt of court, was identified through security footage. He is charged with multiple misdemeanors, the highest being Aggravated Harassment in the Second Degree. Because no felony charges were filed, he was not eligible for detention.
Under New York’s current bail laws, judges cannot hold a defendant solely on concerns about public safety. Councilman Robert Holden criticized the legal framework, arguing that it allows offenders to quickly return to the streets.
The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office is asking additional potential victims to come forward and can be reached at 718-250-2340 or DAAction@Brooklynda.org.
Caines is expected to return to Brooklyn Kings Criminal Court on December 18.
