A woman remains in critical condition after a brutal attack on a Chicago “L” train, during which a man doused her with a flammable liquid and set her on fire, police said.
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. Monday, following a verbal dispute between the 26-year-old victim and a man estimated to be about 45 years old, according to NBC Chicago. Authorities say the suspect poured an unidentified liquid on the woman and ignited it during the confrontation. She suffered severe burns and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she remains in critical condition. The suspect fled the train at a stop.

Police reported that the woman stumbled off the train at the Clark and Lake station and fell to the ground, the AP reports. A witness described the scene to NBC Chicago, saying the victim appeared to be in extreme pain as paramedics loaded her into an ambulance. “I just saw a lady that was laying on the ground, and they were trying to give her CPR,” the witness said. “She looked like she was in an awful lot of pain.”
The attack caused major disruptions on the train line, with service suspended for several hours and resuming around 1:30 a.m. Chicago police confirmed Tuesday that a person of interest is in custody, ABC News reports.
