Vice President JD Vance said Thursday that soaring housing costs are being driven by a combination of record illegal immigration and lagging home construction, arguing that the situation has pushed homeownership out of reach for many Americans.

In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Vance said younger Americans are struggling the most. “A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants,” he claimed.

According to Vance, the influx has intensified competition for available housing at a time when the country is already failing to build enough new homes. He argued that illegal immigrants are “taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens.”

During President Joe Biden’s term, the U.S. experienced one of the largest immigration surges in its history. Congressional Budget Office data shows that an average of 2.4 million immigrants entered the country annually between 2021 and 2024, with roughly 60% crossing illegally, according to an analysis by Goldman Sachs.

Since taking office in January, President Trump has moved to secure the U.S.-Mexico border and accelerate deportations, steps the administration says are necessary to address the situation inherited from Biden.

Vance also pointed to the impact on housing prices, noting, “Under the Biden administration, the price of a new home literally doubled in four years.” By contrast, he said, “Under the Trump administration, housing and rent prices are up about 1% to 2% – actually in line with what you would like to see.”

He said the administration is now focused on expanding housing supply, emphasizing the need for millions of additional homes. “We probably need to build about 5 million new homes,” Vance told Hannity.

The vice president argued that Republican-led states are largely meeting their housing needs, while Democrat-led states are falling behind, blaming regulatory obstacles in states like California. “One of the biggest challenges that we have in the housing market… is that in the blue states, you’re not building enough houses,” he said.

Vance also suggested that advancements in robotics could help increase construction output without replacing skilled workers. “No robot can replace a great blue-collar construction worker,” he said, but added that automation could speed up repetitive tasks and ultimately raise wages while increasing housing availability.
