Chief of the United States Border Patrol, Michael Banks, spoke with Newsmax about what he described as major improvements in securing the southern border under the Trump administration.
Banks emphasized the agency’s nationwide authority, saying, “The United States Border Patrol is exactly that. We’re the United States Border Patrol, and we will go anywhere in the United States and arrest those in this country illegally. There’s no such thing as sanctuary from immigration laws.”
He added that immigration enforcement isn’t about nuances of status: “You’re either in this country legally or illegally, and we’ll go anywhere in this country.”
Banks also referenced Chief Bovino of the El Centro sector, noting his role in broader enforcement efforts. “We’re going to go wherever we need to go in order to enforce immigration law in this country,” he said.
“Because we’ve gotten unprecedented levels of control on our southern border – it has allowed us to expand and move those operations into the internal part of the United States…. it’s all gas, no breaks.” @USBPChief

According to Banks, improved control at the southern border—reaching what he called “record lows”—has given the Border Patrol more capacity to conduct operations within the interior of the United States. He tied this shift to addressing individuals who were “brought into this country, released, unvetted… under the Biden administration.”
“We’ve got a job to do, and it’s all gas, no brakes downhill,” Banks said. “If you’re in this country illegally, you should take advantage of the many opportunities that the U.S. government is providing you to self-deport, to leave on your own… or expect that someone from the United States Border Patrol will find you, arrest you, and deport you.”
Banks also wrote on X that the Border Patrol has ended the practice known as “catch and release,” stating, “If you cross the border illegally, you will be arrested, prosecuted, and deported.”
