Authorities in Maryland say a man accused of domestic assault was released without bail—only to attack the same victim again less than an hour later, injuring a child in the process.
According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, 40-year-old James Bowman III of Waldorf was arrested on November 7 after allegedly punching a woman in the face and biting her hand during a domestic incident. Despite the seriousness of the charges, a district court commissioner released Bowman from the Charles County Detention Center on personal recognizance, meaning he was freed without posting bail, under the condition that he not abuse the victim again.
Officials say Bowman returned to the woman’s home within an hour of his release and attacked her a second time—this time while she was holding a toddler.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office reported that officers responded to a call for help shortly after midnight on November 8 at a residence on Drake Court in Waldorf. When deputies arrived, they found the woman “covered in blood” and holding her child. Investigators determined Bowman had broken into the home, forced open a locked door, and continued assaulting the victim. During the attack, he also struck the child in the forehead, causing injury.
Both the woman and the child were treated by emergency medical personnel. Bowman was taken into custody again and charged with assault and child abuse. This time, officials said, he was ordered held without bond by a district court commissioner, and a judge upheld that order on November 10.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office said the case remains under investigation.
