American social media personality Hasan Piker faced a tense moment during a recent trip to China, where local authorities briefly detained him and several other influencers after a misunderstanding at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.
According to Newsweek, Piker and his group were visiting the People’s Republic of China to film content about their experiences in the country. During a stop at Tiananmen Square, one member of the group displayed an image portraying Piker as Chairman Mao Zedong, accompanied by a caption urging followers to “closely follow the great leader Chairman Mao forward in the revolution.”

Chinese police reportedly viewed the gesture as inappropriate and quickly intervened. The group was detained while authorities reviewed the image and accompanying footage. Sources said Piker explained to the officers that the image was not meant as mockery but rather as a playful reference, and that he admired aspects of Mao’s legacy.
After a short review, police released Piker and the others without charges, though they reportedly confiscated the phone containing the meme.
Following the incident, Piker downplayed the encounter on social media, saying he and his friends “had fun” and that conditions in China were “not as bad as Americans imagine.” He also expressed little national pride for the United States while holding up a Chinese flag in Tiananmen Square.

Critics online argued that Piker’s comments showed poor judgment and insensitivity given China’s human rights record and Mao’s role in policies linked to tens of millions of deaths. Supporters countered that the trip was intended as cultural exploration and not a political statement.
The episode reignited online debate about social media figures who engage with authoritarian regimes and the responsibility that comes with their large followings.
