A 14-year-old from Fairfax, Ohio, has admitted to killing his 64-year-old neighbor after months of planning and online research, court documents revealed Monday. At the time of the February killing of Sheila “Denise” Tenpenny, the teen was 13. Prosecutors said he used AI tools, including ChatGPT, along with other search engines, to research topics such as selecting a victim, strangulation methods, and avoiding police detection. Investigators also said he used AI to look up ways to evade police interrogation.
Under a plea deal, the teen will remain in a youth prison until age 21, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Prosecutors indicated he discussed the crime on social media, though Ohio’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is still examining the scope of those communications. In one message, he reportedly wrote, “This one was a fighter.” Police confirmed that Tenpenny resisted the attack, leaving scratches and pulling out hair, which helped authorities identify the teen through DNA evidence.
Tenpenny was found dead on February 2 by her brother, with a pillow covering her head. Police said the teen attacked her between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., beating and then strangling her. An autopsy revealed trauma to her head and neck, according to WCPO.
As part of the plea agreement, the teen pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, aggravated burglary, and strangulation. Other charges, including a serious youth offender indictment that could have led to adult prison, were dropped.
At Monday’s hearing, Tenpenny’s family described her as a kind and beloved neighbor, noting that the teen targeted her because he believed she was alone. The defendant’s family did not comment on his motives, but his attorney highlighted that actions taken at a young age should not define a person’s entire life. Reports indicate the teen has cerebral palsy.
