Rapper Rod Wave experienced a whirlwind Friday — starting the day with a career milestone and ending it behind bars. According to NBC News, the Florida-born artist, whose real name is Rodarius Green, received his first-ever Grammy nomination in the morning, then was arrested later that day in Atlanta on charges involving weapons, drugs, and reckless driving.
Fulton County jail records show that Green was taken into custody Friday on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance, carrying a firearm or knife, and reckless driving. He was released the following day.
Earlier that same day, Rod Wave earned a Grammy nomination in the “Best Song Written for Visual Media” category for “Sinners,” the title track from the film of the same name.
Following his arrest, Green’s attorneys released a statement condemning the charges as unlawful and politically motivated. They alleged that he was “unjustly profiled and unlawfully arrested” by an officer with the Atlanta Police Department’s Crime Suppression Unit — a division the lawyers described as being “focused on quota-driven arrests rather than genuine public safety.”
“We look forward to vigorously challenging this baseless arrest and the clear violations of Mr. Green’s rights in court,” the statement read.
As of now, neither the Atlanta Police Department nor representatives of the Crime Suppression Unit have issued any public comment.
Rod Wave, known for hits like “Street Runner,” “Tombstone,” and “25,” has built a loyal fan base with his soulful blend of hip-hop and R&B — and now faces a legal battle even as his musical career reaches new heights.
