Federal Border Patrol agents came under fire Saturday in Chicago, Illinois, when a gunman driving a black Jeep opened fire on them during an immigration enforcement operation. The shooter and vehicle remain at large, according to federal officials.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that the attack occurred near 26th Street and Kedzie Avenue, where agents were conducting enforcement actions. In addition to the gunfire, other agitators allegedly threw bricks and a paint can at Border Patrol vehicles.

“Today, U.S. Border Patrol was conducting immigration enforcement operations near 26th Street and Kedzie Avenue in Chicago, Illinois, when an unknown male driving a black Jeep fired shots at agents and fled the scene,” DHS confirmed in a statement. “An unknown number of agitators also threw a paint can and bricks at Border Patrol’s vehicles. The Chicago Police Department was called for assistance and cleared the scene.”

DHS officials condemned the violence, warning that it reflects an alarming rise in hostility toward federal law enforcement.

“This incident is not isolated and reflects a growing and dangerous trend of violence and obstruction,” DHS said. “Over the past two months, we’ve seen an increase in assaults and obstruction targeting federal law enforcement during operations. These confrontations highlight the dangers our agents face daily and the escalating aggression toward law enforcement. The violence must end.”

The attack comes amid heightened national attention on border security and immigration enforcement under President Trump’s administration.
