When it comes to comfort with public nudity, Denmark stands apart from its European neighbors. A new YouGov poll spanning six Western European countries—Denmark, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain—shows Danes as the most open to baring it all, both in attitude and in practice.

More than half of Danish respondents (54%) said they had been naked in at least one public setting as adults. That compares with 45% of Germans, 44% of Spaniards, 31% of the French, 25% of Britons, and 22% of Italians.

Attitudes toward nudity at home also vary widely. A striking 87% of Danes believe it’s acceptable to be nude in one’s own garden, while agreement dips to about 69–72% among Brits, Germans, and Spaniards. The French (57%) and Italians (46%) are far less comfortable with the idea.

When it comes to skinny-dipping, 64% of Danes say it’s perfectly fine—well ahead of roughly half of Germans, about one-third of Brits and the French, and just a quarter of Italians.

However, Germans lead the way when it comes to visiting official naturist locations such as nudist beaches or campsites: 25% say they’ve done so, followed by 22% of Spaniards. Among Danes, only 12% have visited such spots, close to the French (14%) and Italians (11%), while just 6% of Britons have taken the plunge.

Interestingly, YouGov also found Americans are more familiar with public nudity than one might expect. In a separate U.S. poll conducted in August, about 40% of respondents said they’d been fully naked in public at least once.
