Georgia Police Officer Under Investigation After ‘Misgendering’ Man Pretending to Be a Woman in Public Library Bathroom Confrontation
Sasha Swinson speaks outside the Tucker-Reid H. Cofer Branch of the DeKalb County Public Library after claiming a police officer confronted and “misgendered” her for using the women’s restroom.
A DeKalb County Police officer is under investigation following an encounter with a biological male identifying as a woman at the Tucker-Reid H. Cofer Library in Tucker, Georgia. The incident has drawn national attention and sparked debate over privacy and public safety in gender-designated restrooms.
According to Decaturish, the officer approached the individual, identified as Sasha Swinson, after Swinson entered the women’s restroom. The officer reportedly advised Swinson to use either the men’s restroom or the family restroom in the future, citing safety concerns for women and girls.
Swinson accused the officer of “misgendering” and claimed to have felt “terrified” during the exchange. However, the officer’s remarks appeared to center on public safety and the ongoing debate over women’s privacy in restrooms—an issue that has been a point of contention for many parents and community members.
The incident occurred on October 20 around 6:25 p.m. Swinson, who describes himself as a transgender woman, told reporters that he frequently visits local libraries and has not previously had any problems using the women’s restroom. Swinson said officers were at the library because it also serves as an early voting site.
Swinson recalled the exchange, saying the officer told him, “Excuse me, sir, next time you have to use the restroom, you’re going to have to go in either the men’s restroom or the family restroom down the hall.”
When Swinson responded that he had been using the women’s restroom for months, the officer allegedly replied, “But you’re not a woman. That’s obvious.”
Swinson said he tried to remain calm and asked if the officer worked for the library. The officer allegedly replied, “This is a police matter. It’s a safety issue. There are women, little girls in there,” before warning Swinson that he could be arrested and saying, “You should be thanking me for not taking you in right now.”
Left-wing advocacy groups, including the Transgender Law Center and Georgia Equality, have since accused the officer of “transphobia” and are calling for disciplinary action. The groups argue that individuals should be allowed to use restrooms corresponding to their gender identity, calling it a “human right.”
The DeKalb County Police Department confirmed that its Internal Affairs unit is investigating the matter.
“Because the investigation is ongoing, we are unable to share additional details at this time,” a department spokesperson said. “The department remains dedicated to treating all members of our community with dignity, respect, and professionalism.”
The confrontation has reignited broader discussions about the balance between transgender rights and the safety and privacy of women and girls in public facilities—a debate that continues to draw strong opinions nationwide under the leadership of President Donald Trump.
