‘How many eggs chickens can lay’: Man fires shots after pub argument over chickens in Port St. Lucie

A disagreement over chickens escalated into gunfire early Tuesday morning outside Harper’s Pub, authorities say.

Police reported that 44-year-old Peter Riera opened fire on three patrons around 2:30 a.m. after an argument outside the closed establishment. According to Master Sergeant Dominick Mesiti, Riera believed the individuals were trying to con him.

Body camera footage shows Riera being taken into custody by Port St. Lucie police. He is accused of firing four rounds from a .45-caliber Glock at the three individuals.

Mesiti said the argument initially centered on how many eggs chickens can lay. “The conversation got heated for whatever reason,” he explained. Riera then armed himself and began firing.

“One victim ran into the roadway trying to escape. The other two hid. We received several calls about the incident, including one from the shooter himself,” Mesiti added.

Investigators later determined that the victims were acquaintances who had just met Riera that night. All involved had been drinking, and fortunately, no one was injured. During the investigation, one victim was arrested for resisting an officer with violence, and another for resisting without violence.

“Arming yourself with a handgun while under the influence is never a good idea,” Mesiti said. “There’s never going to be a good outcome with that.”

Riera now faces multiple charges and is being held without bond.

Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or may have video to contact Detective Samantha DiPierro at (772) 871-5001 or Treasure Coast Crimestoppers at (800) 273-8477.
