Even some left-leaning New Yorkers can’t get enough of it.
The Nov. 5 front page of the New York Post featuring mayor-elect Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani has turned into a hot commodity, flying off newsstands across the city and even fetching more than $350 on eBay.
The issue, which celebrated Mamdani’s Election Day victory, quickly became the talk of the town Wednesday. Many eager readers couldn’t get their hands on a copy before it sold out.
“The artwork is genius. It’s a shock factor,” said Ben D., a Mamdani supporter, describing the cover’s Soviet-style sketch of Mamdani wielding a hammer and sickle with the headline “The Red Apple.”
Ben, 24, and his 28-year-old friend Joaquin R. scoured around a dozen Brooklyn delis, only to find empty shelves everywhere.
“We love Zohran. It’s a really important moment in our lives. It would’ve been amazing to have the paper to capture this moment,” said Ben.
At Nassau Finest Deli in Greenpoint, Ben noted, “It’s only going to be printed once. We’ve been to at least 10 delis and we’re going to keep looking.”
Aaron Saleh, 33, who works at the deli, confirmed the frenzy: the store opened at 6 a.m., and within an hour all copies were gone. “We had about 100 people asking for it today, and around 30 called to see if we had any left,” he said. Saleh called the issue “amazing.”
City Fresh Market in Astoria saw the same surge as customers cleared the shelves of the Post while leaving other newspapers untouched.
Sharon, a shopper hunting for the cover, said, “I went to two other delis before this one, but they didn’t have it either. The other front covers are boring.”
Demand was so intense at a Bedford-Stuyvesant bodega that the store posted a “No NY Post” sign, a photo of which went viral on X.
Even beyond New York City, the buzz spread. Chiquita Wilder, 24, a Mamdani supporter from Bergen County, New Jersey, visited five stores before 10 a.m. Wednesday but came up empty-handed.
“This is a good time capsule,” she said. “It’ll be fun to look back in a couple of years to see how things have changed—and whether this new era has lived up to expectations.”
She added with a laugh, “It’s also just plain funny. I like seeing how ridiculous they are.”
Secondary markets quickly sprang up, with online resale prices climbing into the hundreds. One eBay seller listed a copy for $355. Another, who has sold Post covers ranging from Charlie Kirk’s controversies to President Trump’s Yankees bid, had already sold two dozen copies at $14.25 each by mid-afternoon Wednesday.
For readers still hunting for the issue, the New York Post store is offering it online, keeping the historic cover accessible to fans and collectors alike.
Ok but where’d you find it because I’ve checked deli’s, a gas station, and a cvs and nothing 😭
