NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Zohran Mamdani has been projected as the winner of the New York City mayoral election, according to the Associated Press and Decision Desk HQ on Tuesday night.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, defeated independent former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a remarkable political upset. His campaign, which began in relative obscurity, quickly captured national attention.

The state assemblymember started the race as an underdog, polling at just 18% in March. Two weeks before the Democratic primary, Mamdani overtook Cuomo in the polls for the first time, ultimately winning the primary with 43.8% of the vote.

“If this campaign has demonstrated anything to the world, it is that our dreams can become reality,” Mamdani said in his primary victory speech. “We have given our city permission to believe again.”

Mamdani’s campaign focused on affordability, proposing fast and free buses, universal child care, and a rent freeze for stabilized housing units. His platform, amplified through social media, drew national attention and endorsements from prominent Democrats, including Gov. Kathy Hochul, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Critics have raised concerns about Mamdani’s experience, suggesting his policies could drive out wealthy residents and questioning his stance on Israel.

Mamdani makes history as the youngest person elected mayor of New York City in over a century, the city’s first Muslim mayor, and its first immigrant mayor in modern times.
