A surprising moment stole the spotlight at Tuesday night’s election celebration for New York City’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, when the message “Trump Is Your President” suddenly appeared on the jumbotron during his victory event.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old Ugandan-born Muslim and self-described democratic socialist, won the New York City mayoral race in a landslide. He defeated Democrat Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in what many described as one of the most shocking upsets in recent political memory.
Fox News reported: “The Fox News Decision Desk has projected that New York City will elect Democratic Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani as its next mayor. The self-described democratic socialist toppled former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a contentious fight for the future of New York City — and possibly the direction of the Democratic Party.”
Mamdani, currently a state assemblyman from Queens, first gained national attention after unexpectedly winning the Democratic mayoral primary in June, defeating Cuomo—who had been widely seen as the favorite.
Since then, Mamdani has aligned himself with progressive icons Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, promoting a far-left agenda focused on affordability measures such as rent freezes, city-run grocery stores, free public childcare, and fare-free public transit.
During his campaign, Mamdani also vowed to reform the city’s prison system and pledged to “bring New York City’s one million Muslims into the halls of power.”
His supporters celebrated into the night—until the unexpected message in bold letters appeared on the big screen: “Trump Is Your President.”
The source of the display remains unknown, and officials have not confirmed whether it was the result of a technical glitch or a deliberate hack.
