Jones’ campaign, however, has been clouded by controversy. Last month, National Review published a series of 2022 text messages allegedly sent by Jones, in which he appeared to express violent fantasies involving prominent Republicans, including then–Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert.
According to the report, the messages surfaced during a conversation in which Jones was venting frustration over what he viewed as excessive praise for the late moderate Democratic legislator Joe Johnson Jr.

The release of those messages sparked widespread condemnation from Republicans and calls for accountability. Despite the backlash, Jones managed to secure a win over Miyares, who had served as Attorney General since 2022.
President Trump and other national Republican leaders have not yet issued statements regarding the election results.
