I begged my daughter not to get more cats

Dear Abby,

My wife and I visit our daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter a few times a year, usually staying for about three days each visit. It’s a five- to six-hour drive, and while we always look forward to seeing them, the visits are difficult for us because we both suffer from severe asthma triggered by cat allergies. Every time we go, we end up wheezing and with red, irritated eyes. Ironically, my son-in-law is allergic to cats as well.

When their cat recently passed away, I gently suggested to my daughter that she not get another one. I explained that if she did, we’d have to stay in a hotel or bed-and-breakfast during future visits, since our health simply can’t handle the exposure. Despite that, she just adopted two new cats.

What do you make of that?

Allergic and Angry
