Asking Eric: I ditched my drunk friend at a party and it led to a problem
I’m reaching out because something happened to my friend, and I can’t help but wonder if I could have done something differently.
It was my friend’s 21st birthday, and we went to a party together. She drank a lot but seemed to be enjoying herself. Around 10 p.m., I decided to leave because I was tired. Before leaving, I asked if she was okay to get home, and she said yes—but she was clearly drunk.
The next day, she called me from the house of an older man she didn’t even remember meeting. She was very stressed about the situation (he appeared to be in his 40s). She’s insisting it’s “no big deal,” but I feel like it is.
I keep going back and forth in my head. On one hand, as adults we should be responsible for ourselves. On the other, she was drunk, and I left her alone. I don’t know what the right thing to do would have been.
