Catawba County authorities responded to a violent incident Wednesday night that left one man dead. According to WCNC Charlotte, deputies were called around 9:15 p.m. for a report of disorderly conduct.
When officers arrived, they found 53-year-old Jose Figueroa unconscious outside. Witnesses later identified 51-year-old Roberto Hernandez Arreola as the suspect responsible for the attack.

WBTV reported that Arreola allegedly struck Figueroa multiple times in the head with a baseball bat. Figueroa was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Arreola was arrested at the scene and has been charged with murder. He remains in jail without bond and is scheduled for his first court appearance Thursday.
After the arrest, the sheriff’s office contacted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and confirmed that Arreola was in the country illegally. Investigators continue to probe the circumstances of the crime.
This incident follows another tragic case in Charlotte earlier this year. On August 22, 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska was fatally stabbed at the East/West Boulevard light rail station. Police identified 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr. as the suspect. He has been charged with first-degree murder and a federal count related to committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system. The Justice Department is seeking the maximum sentence, which could include life in prison or the death penalty.
