Newly discovered Dr. Seuss book coming in 2026
NEW YORK (AP) — A previously unknown manuscript by Dr. Seuss featuring the Cat in the Hat and celebrating the United States is set to be published next year, just in time for the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Titled Sing the 50 United States, it is the first full manuscript by Dr. Seuss—born Theodor Geisel—to be discovered since the posthumous release of What Pet Should I Get? in 2015.
The book is designed to help readers learn the names of all 50 states. In typical Seuss fashion, the Cat in the Hat offers playful guidance: “To sing the 50 United States, you have to use your brain. Massachusetts. Minnesota. Missouri and Montana. M-i-s-s-Mississippi. Maryland! Michigan and Maine!”
“Uncovering a new work from Ted is like discovering a time capsule of his imagination,” said Susan Brandt, president and CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises. “‘Sing the 50 States’ showcases his boundless creativity, wordplay genius, and timeless ability to inspire young readers. We’re thrilled to share this new treasure with readers across America during such a historic milestone year.”
The manuscript was found earlier this year among archival materials at the Geisel Library at the University of California, San Diego. Geisel also left a cover sketch and notes outlining the book’s artistic vision. The new illustrations were created by artist Tom Brannon in Dr. Seuss’s iconic style.
Random House Children’s Books plans to release Sing the 50 States on June 2, 2026, with an initial printing of 500,000 copies.
