Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson lashed out at a reporter this week for using the term “illegal alien,” comparing the legally defined phrase to the historical dehumanization of Black Americans during slavery.

The confrontation occurred after a reporter questioned Johnson about the mounting financial strain on Chicago taxpayers from housing, feeding, and providing healthcare to tens of thousands of migrants who have arrived in the city since 2022. The influx has severely stretched Chicago’s budget, even as crime continues to surge and core services for residents are cut back.

“We don’t have illegal aliens. I don’t know if that’s from some sort of sci-fi message that you wish to add,” Johnson snapped, rejecting the term outright.

When the reporter calmly pointed out that “illegal alien” is the exact legal terminology used in federal law, Johnson doubled down, drawing a stunning comparison.

“Well, listen, the legal term for my people were slaves. You want me to use that term, too? Look, let’s just get the language right. We’re talking about undocumented individuals that are human beings. The last thing that I’m going to do is accept the type of racist, nasty language to describe human beings,” Johnson said.

The term “illegal alien,” however, is not slang — it’s explicitly defined in U.S. Code (Title 8) as any foreign national present in the United States without lawful admission or parole.

Critics argue that Democrats like Johnson deliberately manipulate language to soften the perception of border law violations, reframing illegal entry as “undocumented migration” while ignoring its devastating consequences, from fentanyl smuggling and human trafficking to violent crimes committed by some who exploit lax enforcement.

Under Johnson’s leadership, Chicago — a self-declared “sanctuary city” that largely refuses to cooperate with ICE except in extreme cases — has spent hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on migrant programs.

The mayor’s remarks sparked swift backlash online, with social media users mocking his comparison and accusing him of deflecting from the city’s mounting crises.
