KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — President Trump kicked off the first leg of his Asian tour by joining a troupe of traditional dancers upon arrival in Malaysia’s capital.

After a grueling 23-hour flight from Washington, the 79-year-old president appeared energized, swaying to the rhythm and pumping his fists in time with drums near the red carpet outside Air Force One on Sunday morning local time.

The performance showcased Malaysia’s cultural diversity, featuring dancers representing the country’s major ethnic groups, including indigenous people from Borneo, as well as Malay, Chinese, and Indian communities.

Trump was joined by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who also bobbed along to the music alongside the U.S. president.

The visit marks the start of a five-day, multi-nation mission aimed at strengthening U.S. influence and trade relations in the region. Highlights include meetings in Tokyo with newly elected Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. There is also a potential meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Demilitarized Zone, added late to the itinerary.

Air Force One touched down in Kuala Lumpur escorted by two F-18 fighter jets, a ceremonial honor typically reserved for visiting leaders.

Trump’s journey has been packed with high-profile stops. He held a 14-minute press conference over the Atlantic before refueling in Germany, and during a brief stop in Qatar, he met with Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani aboard Air Force One while UFC matches played on in-flight screens.

The Qatar visit focused on advancing Trump’s Gaza peace plan, including finalizing the deployment of an international peacekeeping force following a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Speaking during the stopover, Trump said, “You’re going to have peace in the Middle East. This is real peace. This has never happened before — 3,000 years this has never happened.”

Trump emphasized that a coalition of nations, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Indonesia, Jordan, and Egypt, would lead the initiative. “The U.S. doesn’t have to get much involved. They’re able to take care of it. It’s an amazing group,” he said.
