‘You’re a f—ing c—’: Florida man shoots woman after insulting her on way to play cards

A Florida man was arrested after allegedly shooting a woman during a confrontation on his way to a card game — only to be tackled and beaten by her husband moments later.
Michael Phillips, 76, has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon following the Saturday evening incident in Grand Island, about 45 miles northwest of Orlando. Deputies with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 7 p.m. to a home on the 3600 block of Sand Road after reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to her forearm and Phillips with visible injuries to his face.
According to witnesses, the victim and her husband were putting their dog into a car when Phillips approached and asked if it was alright to come inside for a card game. As he walked toward the house, Phillips allegedly turned to the woman and hurled a vulgar insult before pulling a handgun from his pocket and firing at her.
The woman’s husband immediately rushed to her defense and began striking Phillips, who was reportedly disarmed during the scuffle. The firearm was later found on a nearby table.
Investigators said the dispute began when Phillips told others not to trust the victim, prompting her to ask why. He allegedly responded with further name-calling before the situation turned violent.
After being read his Miranda rights, Phillips admitted to pulling out the gun. He claimed someone grabbed him, causing the weapon to discharge accidentally. He also told deputies he thought drawing the gun was “the only way he would get answers” and believed it was legal to do so, according to the arrest affidavit.
Phillips was booked into the Lake County Jail on a $25,000 bond. His next court appearance is set for November 10.
