Police say a dispute over a long checkout line at a Marshalls department store in Kearny, New Jersey, turned violent Saturday, ending with one woman stabbed and another taken into custody.
According to authorities, 25-year-old Amber Thompson became enraged while waiting in line and allegedly threatened another female shopper during the argument. The victim and her family reportedly decided to leave the store to avoid further confrontation — but police say Thompson followed them outside.
Investigators say Thompson opened a knife set she had just purchased moments earlier and used one of the blades to repeatedly stab the woman in the parking lot. The victim was found bleeding and rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

After the attack, officers say Thompson ran back into the store and was later discovered hiding in a bathroom. The blood-stained knife was reportedly found resting on a baby changing table nearby.
Witnesses expressed shock that such a violent incident occurred in broad daylight. “It’s just crazy because things like this never happen here,” one shopper told local reporters.
Marshalls released a statement emphasizing its commitment to the safety of customers and employees, thanking police for their quick response to the situation.
Thompson has been charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and endangering another person.
