OSLO, Norway (AP) — The Norwegian Nobel Committee is set to announce Friday who will receive this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, one of the most prestigious yet unpredictable honors in the world.

The committee traditionally rewards efforts that promote lasting peace, strengthen international cooperation, and support the quiet work of institutions that uphold these values.

Speculation has swirled around the possibility of the prize going to U.S. President Donald Trump, a topic the president himself has fueled. However, longtime observers of the Nobel process say his chances remain slim, despite several foreign policy moves for which he has claimed credit.

Other potential recipients highlighted by the Peace Research Institute Oslo include Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms, a community-led network central to the country’s humanitarian efforts amid civil war; the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court; and the Committee to Protect Journalists, a U.S.-based organization dedicated to defending press freedom and tracking journalists killed in the line of duty. Last year’s award went to Nihon Hidankyo, a grassroots movement of Japanese survivors of the atomic bomb who have long worked to uphold nuclear disarmament.

The Nobel Peace Prize is the only Nobel honor awarded in Oslo. The other prizes — medicine, physics, chemistry, and literature — were announced earlier this week in Stockholm, Sweden, with the economics prize set to be revealed next Monday.
